Bonin Architects Wins Multiple Awards for Cottage Renovation AIANH Excellence in Architecture Awards Cornerstone Award, NH Home Builders Association
Bonin Architects' Lakefront Cottage Renovation was
awarded both a Merit Award and the People's Choice Award at the 2011 AIANH Excellence
in Architecture Awards Ceremony in Manchester, New Hampshire held on January
22, 2011 and a Cornerstone Award from the NH Home Builders Association at their ceremony held April 7, 2011.
Project description:
Originally one of eleven cabins on "The Point", the recently subdivided
property left this and one other cabin in close proximity to the beautiful
beach and lake. Removal of the 'point' cabin allowed for a meandering path from
renovated cottage to the dock as well as substantially opening the view to the
lake from the remaining cabin.
A newly exposed cathedral ceiling is warm and
inviting as are the reused and repositioned windows and doors for capturing
lakeside views and breezes. Salvaged and refinished from the cottage are framing
lumber, T&G boards and floors. Finishes and materials are low or no VOC
products and even the woodstove is a found item making a new home in this
beautiful location.
With material reuse and minimal site impact as two
principal goals throughout the design and renovation process, the resultant
cabin provides for three seasons of comfortable lakefront access and family
gatherings.
AIANH Juror's
comments: "Understated, simple, cost effective renovation. Excellent use
of limited space. Restrained and authentic in use of materials and details. In
some ways, this is the most appealing project .... maybe it speaks to the desire
for simplicity in all of us."
"Architect Jeremy Bonin sees buildings come together from the inside out."
Jeremy Bonin, Lead Architect and Principal Partner of Bonin Architects & Associates, is included in New Hampshire Union Leader's "40 Under Forty", an annual honors program that highlights some of the state's best, brightest, and youngest individuals.
"Ten years of 40 under Forty really speaks for the success of this effort," said Union Leader President and Publisher Joseph W. McQuaid. "It was and is intended to both showcase and honor those who are contributing so much to life in New Hampshire and to encourage others to do likewise. There are only 24 hours in a day, but the young men and women we have honored in these classes manage to use them to the max. They add value to their communities and state in their daily endeavors, and many of them then somehow find the time to do more, all the while keeping family in focus."
The 40 honorees will be recognized March 8th by the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Union Leader in a reception sponsored by Citizens Bank.
Kimberly Bonin was presented with the Lake Sunapee Region BNI Member of the Year award at the Business Network International Regional Conference in Portsmouth, NH on September 16, 2010. Over 150 BNI members were present at the award ceremony. Bonin was nominated unanimously by Chapter members.

Bonin Architects Becomes an ENERGY STAR Architect / Home Plan Partner
Bonin
Architects & Associates is pleased to announce our partnership with
Energy Star, a joint program of the US Environmental Protection Agency
and the US Department of Energy, as an Architect / Home Plan Partner.
Energy Star is recognized by more than 60% of consumers nationwide,
working with over 12,000 public and private sector organizations to
ensure energy efficient products and practices help to reduce high
energy bills, improve comfort and help to protect the environment.
"We're
pleased to be able to offer home plans to our clients that are designed
to earn the Energy Star label," said principal architect Jeremy Bonin
AIA NCARB LEED AP. "Each plan is independently reviewed and verified
to meet Energy Star's standards for energy-saving features and
construction practices that will result in a home that will enjoy
significant energy savings."
An Energy Star partnership fits in
nicely with our focus on sustainable and green home design and our
dedication to educating consumers on renewable energy systems such as
solar energy, geothermal, and wind power, as well as energy efficient
choices for lighting, appliances, and technology.
All Energy
Star house plans include energy-efficient details and specifications
for features such as tight construction and duct systems,
properly-installed insulation, high performance windows, efficient
heating and cooling equipment, and Energy Star qualified lighting and
appliances to reduce energy costs by 20 to 30 percent. After the home
is built, an independent Energy Star Rater calculates and tests the
energy efficiency of the home and submits the results to Energy Star
for approval.
Jeremy Bonin Winner of Timber Frame Guild Design Competition
If you are planning a trip to Montana, be sure to plan a visit to see Missoula's Silver Park, a 14 1/2 acre park along the Clark Fork River (right) in the city district. Missoula engineer Jennifer Anthony, who has a passion for everything related to timber and timber framing, came up with a great idea to have three timber bench shelters built for the park.
The Timber Framers Guild, always ready to be involved in community efforts, held a design competition for the shelters. Three winners from the 34 design entries were announced last year and include a design submitted by our own Jeremy Bonin.
Of the three winning designs, the Guild chose Jeremy's design to be the featured project of a five-day workshop in September 2008 because it gave participants "an excellent opportunity for honing their skills in compound joinery". The other two winning shelter designs were also constructed and brought to the Silver Park site.
