TUCKED INTO A COMMUNITY of smaller cottages at the tip of a prominent peninsula, this charming cottage has a handsome presence and comforting scale. While the constraints of the site may restrict size of building and hardscape, it provides a unique opportunity for the small yet wonderful details of the project to shine. Timber brackets, pergola, and built-in bench seat are architectural details that add interest to the living space beyond the walls of the house. Aged granite and natural fieldstone materials complement its classic stylings and lend a sense of longevity and stature to the project. Reclaimed, first-generation granite curbing was repurposed as pavers and steps throughout the landscape. Reclaimed cobblestone was also used as an in-set field on the terrace. Classic sun perennials soak up the southern exposure and soften the hardscape and natural stone veneer. A stainless-steel grill is built-in to the stonework just off of the terrace for outdoor cooking and entertaining. Patio and driveway surfaces were constructed using previous paving techniques as a tool to manage stormwater run-off.
